Daar doet u vast uw voordeel mee.

How Project Management Training is used in the Pet Food Industry

How Project Management Training is used in the Pet Food Industry
Statistics have shown that, in 2005, there were an astonishing seventy-five million pet cats and sixty million pet dogs, in households across the United States. This means that the majority of households, within the United States, have one pet or more. Pets are considered to be an indispensable part of the family; they in essence have become a member of the family. People spend millions of dollars a year on pet products including: pet food, pet toys, pet clothing, veterinarian visits, and anything that a pet owner deems essential for their pet. The leader in the pet market, today, is the pet food industry. With over one hundred million pets nationwide many cats and dogs need fed everyday. Because of this the Pet Food Institute has been established to ensure that the pet food consumer's purchase meets the nutritional requirements required for healthy companions. The Pet Food Institute has to establish various programs each year to make sure that the nutritional standards are achieved. Through the use of project management training this becomes an easier task

Whether you are a veterinarian, pet advocate, entrepreneur or employee in the pet food industry you can benefit greatly by using project management training. Project management is where one person is responsible for the handling of a specific project. They must make sure that the project is completed within a certain timeframe and that it does not exceed the set budget. Project managers must be organized, detail-orientated and dependable. This type of manager is critical to the implementation of valuable programs that aid in the satisfaction of pet food standards. Project managers must efficiently and effectively bring these programs into operation. Through project management training all of this becomes possible.

Companies, within the arena of the pet food industry, can either hire a project manager or send a chosen employee to complete project management training. It is proven that project managers complete their assigned tasks in a shorter span of time. Plus they eliminate the confusion when several people are working on a project. No longer do you have to run back and forth from a group of employees to find out the progress of an emerging program. Only one person handles the project, one person who is trained to stay within budget regulations and deadlines. With project management training there are so many crucial programs that can be started, completed and launched successfully each year. Not only the pet food industry benefits from this but so do over one hundred million pets and their owners.

The pet food industry first started with the creation of a "dog cake" or dog biscuit a "dog cake" was prepared from wheat meal, beetroot, vegetables and meat. James Spratt was the genius who first saw a market therefore delivering the pet food industry to the public. This idea came to him, in the nineteenth century, while he was a lightening rod salesman in London. This launched the first dog food campaign. His customers were usually English gentlemen who owned dogs for mainly sporting reasons. Soon this popular craze set up operation in the United States. An American invented the first dog food that was distributed to consumers. Milk-Bone was established during this enterprising time. Imagine how many projects or programs were needed to bring about the monumental success of this initial start. This is why project management training proves to be an essential component in industry, especially the pet food industry. Someone is needed to start production lines, product lines, advertising and safety inspections. All of these different avenues can be separated into hundreds of projects. With the launch of several of these projects the famous bone-shaped biscuit was born.

An American named Bennett believed that a firm bone-shaped biscuit would cause good health because of the animals gnawing and chewing. This act would be good for the teeth. His biscuits consisted of wheat germ, liver oil and irradiated yeast. These ingredients would form a nutritious and edible food for dogs. More and more men became involved in this growing branch of the pet food industry. As the inventors came up with more bright and inspiring ideas new product lines came about such as: dry dog kibble and canned dog food. The food was originally sold in one-hundred pound bags but soon it was realized that consumers were more prone, depending on the amount of dogs they had, to purchase five and ten pound bags. Soon veterinarians started to realize the importance of this growing product line and started to make sure that the food was scientifically balanced to enable optimum health. With more professionals becoming involved there needed to be nationwide regulations and laws established to monitor the quality of pet food. It is here, in this realm of the pet food industry, that project management training is necessary. The more programs that can be created to ensure pet food safety, the safer and healthier our companions are.

Through different projects and experiments cat food became a top-market seller. Commercially sold cat food was a late bloomer on the two-hundred million dollar pet food market. This was because the co-creators of cat food had to depend on a can or single standard tuna fish ration. Cat food expanded when the food switched from being fish orientated to meat orientated. Now, millions of cat owners can purchase dry or wet cat food. This doubled the profits accumulated by pet food industrialists as the amount of cat owners bypasses the number of dog owners. Some cat owners have four or more feline companions at a time. The pet food industry not only covers dogs and cats but any animal that is considered to be a household pet. There are a lot of markets to cover and that is why project management training is perfect for the overseeing of safety programs and even the advertising programs required in order to bring these products to the consumer's attention.

In 1957, the Pet Food Institute became the pet owner's and the pet's voice where nutrition is concerned. The Pet Food Institute represents ninety-seven percent of cat and dog food manufacturers in operation today. The Institute is dedicated to the well-being of all pets. They are passionate about programs that support initiatives that advance the quality of pet food on the market. They support research into nutrition and the part pets play in our lives. The Pet Food Institute educates the public, diligently, on proper pet care and they are responsible for being a representative to the pet food industry. They represent the pet food industry before the State and Federal government. To make all of these amazing tasks happen they must use project management training. Project management training is an efficient and effective way to handle specific projects within set budgets and timeframes. It is necessary to ensure the safety of our pets. These are the companions that we love and nurture, as we do our family, for all of their years.

While new product launches are considered news in many circles (just look at the coverage the national media gives to clothing launches, or the Apple iPhone), this need not be something restricted to large businesses.

First, use the news to find the needs of your customer bases. Every news item that discusses a current event can be interpreted to show that there's a demographic slice out there with an unmet need. For example, if the local news story is talking about a group of people supporting a political candidate, you've just identified a demographic group - people who will vote for a person based on his stated positions. Would selling merchandise that supports that candidate (such as buttons or bumper stickers?) or supports the issue the candidate stands for sell? If your local high school football team is going up against a long term rival in the coming weeks, it will likely get news coverage, and that can be turned into products supporting them in their next game (or, for the truly brave, supporting their opponents.) This is harder to do on the collegiate and national levels because most university and professional sporting team mascots are copyrighted and trademarked, requiring extensive licensing fees to use.

If you have products with a strong seasonal sales pattern, you can watch for events tied to holidays to help you decide on stocking levels and inventory recirculation patterns - it's never a pleasant experience to mark down inventory after a holiday, but it's better to mark down a few items after Easter than to sell out a week before the demand has been sated.
Project Management Training And Home Construction And Design

Project Management Training And Home Construction And Design
Building a house, and doing good interior design, is a multi-step process, and one that benefits significantly from project management skills. As someone considering entry into the home sales and design business, this project management training is essential to your success.

First, every home construction project and design project has an end state. In project management, defining your "victory conditions", or success margin, is the first step towards getting a project rolling. The end state of home design is having a house for sale that's attractive and built to the client specifications.

Like all project management tasks, defining "success" early on is critical. If you enter a large project without defining success, the likely outcome is "project creep" - where specifications change, and new features and materials get added to the project over time, and the project rapidly turns out late, over budget, and likely not as good as it could've been had it had a tightly focused goal from the get go.

Now, on a project as complicated as a house, defining what constitutes a "good house" has a lot of regional variables. For example, some homes emphasize the view, or the interior space layout, while others, particularly in the modern market, emphasis "green" construction techniques and energy efficiency. A lot of this will be defined by your client's needs, and what they'll want in a home as well as the parcel of land they're building on, and large chunks will be set by the architecture firm laying out the floor plans.

If you're doing home design directly, there are several features that, with a proper project management type of approach, can differentiate your home design from others. First and foremost, decide if you're doing custom floor plans, or modifying an existing floor plan sets - custom floor plans will cost more, and take more time, but give you the flexibility of offering your client exactly what they want to see. Look for floor plans with open space, access for airflow, and good natural lighting with a shade break if it's to the south. We mentioned "green" construction techniques before - these can vary from choice of materials (clay packed hay bales for insulation) to construction techniques (using low impact drainage for laying the foundation slab) to building the home around energy conservation, like using radiant heating under concrete floors, or putting integrated solar panels and similar items to minimize the utility bills on the house, and even allow the owner to sell power back to the electrical utility. Project management and home design has a lot of aspects!

Once you've determined exactly what sort of home you're building for your clients, it's time to start working backwards from the date of completion. Before the new owners can move in, the house has to be inspected by the local municipality. Before the municipality can inspect the construction, the utility runs have to be put in, but not covered by the interior walls, and they have to be inspected by the gas, water and electric utilities.

Before that can happen, all the joists have to be constructed, and the floors laid down so that workers can walk on them, and before that has to be done, the foundation laid, the furnace put in, and any special energy efficiency features need to be put into the floor plans.

Think of project management in home construction as making the "recipe" and "detailed instruction list" of what needs to be done in what order to make the entire project come off without a hitch. It's at this stage that you'll book the appointments with the architect to modify the blue prints, and with the consulting architect, you'll make appointments for the concrete contractors to come and lay the foundation slab, laying out the time needed to finish the job correctly. Once you have an estimate for when the slab will be completed, it's time to buy the construction materials. Now, it doesn't make sense to have all the construction materials delivered at once - you'll need a good, detailed plan for what will be needed when, and when items will be completed, so that you have exactly the right materials and tools and professionals on hand at the right time.

Every plan, even one doing home construction, has to have some flexibility in it, some slack for contractors who don't show up, delays caused by weather, people getting sick, or parts or materials running out or becoming more expensive. Make sure you build that into your working budget for man-hours and money, as part of the process. Some parts of construction are natural choke points - this is the sort of work that, until it's completed, nothing else can be done. A good construction foreman will walk you through choke points and ways to work towards them in parallel, so that a work stoppage at one part of the job won't have your entire construction and contracting team sitting around.

Once the primary structural elements are done, and the basic roof is up, it's time to run in your utility lines and electrical wiring for the home. This is one of the most expensive jobs to be done, and should be handled by a qualified professional. Faulty wiring is one of the chief causes of house fires in the United States, and it's completely avoidable.

The last part of constructing a home is putting on the final roofing material, putting in the windows, doing the interior painting and laying down the carpets, or acid washing the concrete floors. All of the touches that turn a box with four walls and a door into a home that will be cherished by its owners for years, and the source of pride and fond memories as they raise their family.

Using Computer (and Other Games) to Learn Project Management Training Skills

Using Computer (and Other Games) to Learn Project Management Training Skills
The militaries of several countries use computer games and simulations to both educate and train soldiers and officers in tasks and thought processes related to their missions and specializations; this has gone on since the 1960s, with Avalon Hill and SPI boardgames, and continues today with both commercial games like Close Action and TACOPS and with assorted military simulations such as Core Battle Simulation, JSIM and TACSIMs.

This technique is moving (slowly) into the business world as well, and one of the places where it's making the greatest inroads is in the realm of executive training. Allen Varney, the designer of several board and computer games, was commissioned to make a board and role-playing game about business ethics by the University of Texas-Austin School of Business, and in his own words, "They paid me more for that one project than I'd made in the last four years as a video game developer." His game focused on the decision making matrices of management decision cycles, presenting players with choices based on games theory, where there may be some payout for unethical behavior, including very subtle failure modes, where the fact that what's being done is unethical is less than obvious.

From the perspective of training up new managers in your own business, computer games and board games can be used to great effect, however, there are some pitfalls. First, make sure that you're aware of what goal you're aiming for – education or training?

Educational games focus on one nested set of decisions and tend to remain fairly abstract. A good educational game should allow the players to explore the decision space reflected by that kind of game. A training simulation is designed to measure how well a student is absorbing and re-enacting doctrines and training techniques. While a first person shooting game, like Doom or CounterStrike is no substitute for rifle training for a soldier, it's an excellent tool to see if soldiers have learned about movement, communications, and coordinated actions in a hostile environment, as the same things that will keep you alive in the field will keep you alive in the game – moving from cover to concealment, mobilized overwatch, and similar concepts. Allen Varney's business ethics simulation is a subtler version of this kind of tool. It's designed to give an outside observer a metric for determining how well lessons have been absorbed and applied.

For executives (and officers in the armed forces) there needs to be an emphasis on education as well as training. Education isn't just regurgitation of doctrine and training, it's an understanding of decision making processes. A good officer should be familiar with the decision making process of the layer of management that reports to him, and for two levels above him. The same applies to a manager in most businesses. Furthermore, an officer (or manager) should be able to assess challenges to his course of actions, be aware of assets available to him, and with initiative, be able to deploy those assets without compromising the plans of those above him. Thus, educational games should focus on concepts and decision loops.

A good example of an educational game is Calhammer's Diplomacy, published by Avalon Hill. In Diplomacy, each player takes on the role of one of the European Great Powers prior to World War I, and all of them are contesting for resource centers placed on a stylized map of Europe. In addition to teaching some geography and elements of how these powers interacted with each other, Diplomacy is an excellent game for learning project management, and general business making decision skills.

First, no player in Diplomacy can "go it alone". Every player must make some accommodations with his neighbors on the map. It forces players to break down long term objectives into substeps, and bargain for resources. Those deals need to be made mutually beneficial to have any chance of other players accepting them, which is good for learning how to handle inter-departmental cooperation in the workplace.

Second, each player has to contend with finite resources. This is important for any businessman, or any manager, who has to contend with shifting office supplies, labor budgets, and project delivery dates. One of the finite resources that must be contended with is, interestingly enough, attention. There's only 15 minutes to negotiate in a Diplomacy turn, and only a finite period of time to write your orders. Furthermore, you can never be certain of just how firm your alliances are. Each player needs to have contingency plans in place just in case an ally falls through on needed support…or turns on them to try and win the game. The general play attitude of Diplomacy can be described as "genial paranoia."

If you're looking to reinforce these lessons in a computer game, consider StarCraft or multiplayer Civilization IV. Both games allow you to build forces from limited resources, and force you to manage when things will appear for utilization. This is the bread and butter skill of project management. Both games also force you to blend operational and grand strategic thinking, which is the essence of being aware of what you need to accomplish now, and how it meshes with the long term organizational goals of the company. Both games are excellent project management training tools.

When taking lessons from computer games, focus on the decision making loops, and focus on concepts. When trying to turn computer games into structured education for your employees, remember that games are supposed to be fun. Games that aren't fun tend to get negative feedback from the players, and the lessons imparted by them don't stick. Focus on how the core concepts of the game will help your new managers work in your organization, but let them enjoy what they're doing – people learn more, and absorb the lessons better, when they're fun.

So, the next time you're caught playing a computer game in the office, perhaps you can justify it as professional development.

Project Management Training As A Valuable Business Practice For An Art Supply Business

Project Management Training As A Valuable Business Practice For An Art Supply Business
Project management is one of the critical skills of any entrepreneur or business person, regardless of the field they're in. It's not just limited to software development and large scale construction contracts. Any sort of business with completed end goals, or regularly recurring and knowable patterns of commerce can benefit from a project management perspective.

One example is running an art supply business. The first step is ascertaining the scope of the project - what sort of artists are active in your community, and what sort of art programs are available at local high schools, community centers and university campuses? This should be the first piece of information you gather before going into an art supply business.

The second data point is whether or not you want to do a dual shop, with art supplies and gallery and display space. Art galleries are a slightly different model from an art supply shop, in that they have to be more open, and accessible, which means more attention put on lighting and floor space, both of which increase overhead. On the other hand, your inventory is sold almost completely on consignment after a gallery showing for the artist, and it's a good tool for building up your shop in the local arts community.

Once you've assessed the local needs for an art supply store or gallery space, it's time to do the brainstorm disasters phase of project management. Look for similar endeavors that failed, and try to isolate what caused them to fail. This can actually be enjoyable, in a morbid sort of way - the best way to learn from failure is to learn from someone else's, because you don't have time to make all the mistakes yourself. It's best to make your contingency plans now for things like vendors going out of business (always have a backup!), and for what to do with stock that's aged out of salability. While there's a truism that failing to plan is planning to fail, planning for failure in the first place reduces stress and saves time when the inevitable unexpected shift in focus happens. While you can spend a lot of time on this phase, recall that the ultimate goal is a final, completed business plan for what you'll need to get started, that's in touch with local community needs, and is broken down, step by step, into a plan of action.

Once you've got that plan, build a wall chart with deliverable dates - when do you get access to your store front? When does your inventory arrive? Do you need to have contractors come in to set up shelving or adjust the lighting for a gallery display? Have you established your line of credit with your distributors? Have you started your advertising campaign, including the Grand Opening sale?

As the project progresses, mark off the items that are done; each one is a step towards your ultimate goal. Project management is an essential skill of any executive, and is important to attend a project management training and seeing the big picture required for the overall success of your business.

Project Management Training And Getting Into the Business of Selling Spirits
The art of management involves tracking several details essential to your business, and making sure that the right things happen in the right order at the right time. This is the ultimate in logistical skills, and is called project management. Project management training is one of the foundational keys to running a business, and can help nearly any business succeed. To illustrate our point, we recently talked with Marty Schlessman, of Indulgences, a local wine-and-chocolates shop.

Marty's business is located in a good shopping district with lots of foot traffic, but one that's prone to seasonal bursts, like a lot of pedestrian friendly shopping areas. To plan for his business needs, he has to keep track of shelf life of products, seasonal demands, and keep apprised of new products in the wine and chocolates luxury markets.

Marty's advice (once we assured him that we were just doing an interview) would be to start your planning before you open your business. Study the local alcohol laws in your area. The restrictions on serving alcohol versus selling it are radically different, and the laws regulating both are practically written in a foreign language. Make sure that you're zoned for alcohol sales.

Second, look into what kinds of alcohol sell in your area, and what sorts of clientele you want to attract. Marty wanted to attract an upscale client base, and so structured his shop accordingly. In his community, there were two other dedicated wine and spirits shops, but neither of them were near the Parkade, where his store is. He knew alcohol sales were permitted, because there are several bars and night clubs on the Parkade. As he wasn't selling for consumption on premises, the bars weren't really direct competition.

The next phase of his planning was deciding what to sell. Since trying to sell beer next to bars generally doesn't work well, and it didn't fit the client profile he was looking for, he focused on wines, and once the idea of wine as an indulgence crossed his mind, expanding to other luxury items (like cheeses and chocolates) was a no brainer.

In the wine trade, wines and chocolates have a shelf life; one of the places where forethought and planning is necessary is seasonal events. Most chocolate is sold in the spring, for Valentine's Day, Easter, and wedding gifts. Caviar and cheeses tend to sell in the winter months, and wines sell according to what menus they go with, with menus changing seasonally. For example, white wines go with fish, which tends to be more common with Lenten meals.

Likewise, Marty also keeps an eye on the wedding registers, and tries to make sure that his latest stock list is present at the three wedding boutiques in the area, one of them a short distance from his shop. This helps facilitate cross market sales, but also requires keeping track of when the last stock list was updated, and checking back to make sure that replacement lists are available.

All in all, even in a business as giddy as wines and chocolates, planning and forethought and project management skills pay off handsomely!

Using the Education System to fill your Project Management Training
If you are a business owner, you should never limit your employee selection to just those people currently working for you. You can find up and coming business superstars throughout the education system. You could develop a part-time project management training course that will allow high school students to receive training before they even graduate. This will give any business a huge advantage over their competition. You will be grooming your next group of managers before they even get out of high school.
How Project Management Training is helping doctors in their battle against childhood obesity

How Project Management Training is helping doctors in their battle against childhood obesity
Children's Health-care is a category that covers a broad range of topics. One of those topics deals with social issues that affect children and teenagers daily. Childhood obesity is becoming not only a social issue but it is also an alarming health issue that is plaguing both teenagers and parents alike. According to a study conducted by the Center for Disease Control, "Fifteen percent of children and adolescents are now overweight. Childhood obesity is linked to several terminal diseases. Being overweight can lead to a teenager developing cancer, diabetes and heart disease later in life. Katherine Horgen and Kelly Brownell, two childhood obesity authors report that, "Today's children's lives may be shorter than their parents."

This is a scary fact that is becoming truer as physicians have watched childhood obesity percentages double within the past two decades. Many physicians, nutritionists, school health managers, health-care workers, child advocates, nurses and more have put their heads together to create programs that will stop the rising statistics of childhood obesity. Many of these projects have become a top priority for health-care professionals. With so many stresses within the realm of health-care, project management training can make handling these extremely important and crucial projects much easier. This alone eases the pressure on anyone who is involved. It makes makes a health project easier to get off its feet

Many of us have only briefly heard of project management. This is a precise area of management that deals with only one project at a time. Project management is expected to oversea that an exact project does not extend the allotted budget allowed and that the project is finished or launched by its set date. As medical professionals find themselves becoming more and more increasingly busy it becomes hard to keep up with certain projects. Plus many projects are handled by a group of people which causes everyone to be running back and forth to find out the necessary information they are in need off. With project management only one person carries out the intended mission of the project. This makes a project easier to get off its feet. Plus the project is handled more efficiently and in an organized fashion. In the field of children's health-care hundreds of projects are launched each year to ensure the continuing health of our children. With project management lending a helping hand many more valuable health-care programs can be put into operation each year.Recently started health projects on schools

There were two health-care programs that were started recently, by most School Districts, to prevent and target childhood obesity. The two programs were the National School Lunch Program and the calculating of school-age children's Body Mass Index. A recent study performed by the Harvard School of Public Health determined that overweight adolescents consumed an extra seven-hundred to one-thousand calories a day. Over the period of one decade this added consumption puts an extra fifty-eight pounds on an adolescent. Many of us have trouble losing five pounds much less over fifty pounds. There has become an "energy gap" due to childhood inactivity. It is proven that a high percentage of children spend most of their free-time hours playing video games, watching television or sit at the computer. Children talk with friends on the computer, instant message, search websites and play computer games.

All of these activities involve sitting down which attributes to the low amount of calories being burned. It used to be that children came home from school, rode their bikes, walked to friend's houses, played baseball or went to the local park. Nowadays we have converted from outside activities to inside activities therefore causing sedentary lifestyles. This has become a real problem in children's health-care as more active lifestyles are needed. The National School Lunch Program and Body Mass Index program have been started to aid in these issues. Through project management training both programs have been started and will become a success, as a decline is hopefully seen, in the number of overweight adolescents.
